Protection Around Your Home

• Whether you're home or not, make sure your doors are locked

• Be cautious about who you open your door to...If it's someone who claims they're from the Hydro Company or anything else, ask for their identification

• Do not give out your name on an answering machine's outgoing message. If possible, ask a male friend to speak on your outgoing message.

• Receiving obscene or threatening phone calls shouldn't be dismissed so easily. Call local police and ask what can be done to make them stop and how you can prevent anything from escalating.

Protection in Your Car

• Make sure you park in a well lighted area and where there is a steady traffic of people

• Lock your car, even if you're in it...Hide anything of value from plain sight.

• Be aware of your surroundings when you're walking towards your car. If someone seems to be lurking around close to your vehicle, do not approach it. Go where there are people and check to see if they're gone a little later.

• Consider a cell phone in case you're stuck and can't get to help.

• If you're stranded, do not accept help from anyone. Stay in your car and ask them to call the police for you. If someone else is stranded, do not stop to help. Instead go for the nearest phone and notify police.

• Have your keys ready in your hand when walking to your car. It will save you from franctically trying to find him if anything should happen.

• If someone wants to carjack your vehicle, give him the car. You can replace it, but not your life and health.

Protection at an ATM

• Avoid using ATM's at night. If that's not possible, choose one in a well lighted area with lots of people around. Do not seclude yourself!

• Have a friend accompany you to an ATM.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all time. Pay attention to detail.

• Make your transactions as fast as you can, put your money away right away, and do not stick around as if to ask for someone to approach you.
