Learn It!

A good place to gain lots of knowledge about cameras is a photography course. Not only do you get to understand the tools, you can get inspired by attending a fun class. Check out the community centers or continuing education centers and get informed. Another "less committed" and less expensive way is to check out your local library or book store. You can learn at your own pace, and slowly develop your eye and creativity if your ways of learning suit you better this way. You'll also feel great accomplishment!

Apperture

The apperture is the opening of the lens. It controls the amount of light let into the camera. The less light coming in, the more range of focus you will get. If you let less light in, you will have to adjust other settings.

Shutter Speed

The shutter speed refers to the amount of time that the shutter of the camera is open and to expose film. If you have a small apperture setting, you need to set more time. Speed is measured in fractions of a second.

Film

We've all seen those numbers on the film packages 100, 200, 400 and so on? These determine the speed at which the film processes light. The camera mechanisms need to be adjusted to this.

Lenses

Your lens has much to do with how light is exposed on film when the apperture and shutter is open. If you have a zoom lens you have to compensate more exposure by the time the light travels through.
